Buckeye Fire Department was established as a volunteer department by an Ordinance of the Town Council in the early 1940's, and as the City of Buckeye has grown so has the Buckeye Fire Department. BFD was established as a full time paid department in the year 1999. In the past six years the BFD has grown faster than most departments have in twenty. Over the past 60 years, the department has evolved into a highly professional career service with a highly active reserve component to better serve the community of Buckeye. The Town of Buckeye is the largest city in the Maricopa County with 700 square miles and expanding more and more each day.

Currently, the BFD operates four stations with a fifth and sixth possibly by winter 2006 or early 2007.The Town of Buckeye Fire Department, in cooperation with the Phoenix Regional Dispatch Center, and the City of Phoenix Fire Department, provide the citizens of Buckeye with the best emergency communication system in Arizona. Emergency calls go first to the local Police Department, and then are routed to the Phoenix Regional Dispatch Center also known as the alarm room. At this point the dispatcher asks the caller questions to determine the severity of the incident and so that the most appropriate response can be dispatched in as short a time a possible. The Town of Buckeye pays for this service on an annual basis based on the number and types of calls generated. The benefits include seamless communication between surrounding communities, and seamless response from those cities. The Buckeye Fire Department recently joined the automatic aid system. This system allows for the closest fire engine to be sent to an emergency, regardless of city boundaries. Since the inception of the automatic aid system, all stations have seen a significant increase in calls for service. Specialized resources are now available to the fire department such as the automatic dispatch of scene safety officers, command vehicles, and special operations teams.
